The Show's 2021 Virtual KEGS & EGGS Event

KEGS & EGGS is going virtual with Ballast Point Brewing Company! Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with The Show on Wednesday, March 17 at 5:00pm when you'll be able to stream KEGS & EGGS live on Facebook.

There will be lots of laughs and some of our traditional festivities like the Irish Price Is Right, lots of beer, and lots of new surprises!

We're excited to partner on Kegs & Eggs with Ballast Point Brewing Company as they celebrate 25 years as a craft beer pioneer this year!

What started in 1996 as a small group of homebrewers at San Diego’s Home Brew Mart who simply wanted to make great beer evolved into the team of adventurers known today as Ballast Point.

2021 marks the return to shared innovation for Ballast Point with the addition of two new offerings to its year-round portfolio: Big Gus and Wee Gus.

Big Gus and Wee Gus hit off-premise shelves this month throughout Ballast Point’s distribution network in Southern California and Arizona in 12 oz. 6-pack cans, and is currently available on draft at all Ballast Point taprooms in San Diego, Anaheim, and Long Beach.

The journey to the Brothers Gus began several years ago as the brainchildren of the brewers at Ballast Point’s Little Italy R&D facility. The team set out to buck a few trends — namely the hazy IPA one — by making a beer whose outward appearance belied its taste and one that was clearly different than other beers on the market.

Virtual Tasting - Special Guest

Colby Chandler - Ballast Point Vice President and Specialty Brewer (now, Colby “Lord” Chandler Governor of the Point, Special Envoy to the Faithful)

Second longest employee of Ballast Point. Learned the craft of beer making at Home Brew Mart in Linda Vista. SD Magazine called him a Beer and Flavor Innnovator. Involved in the creation of Ballast’s award-winning flagship beer, Sculpin.  Two Home Brew Mart employees, Doug Duffield and George Cataulin, each brewed gold-medal-winning IPAs. When they looked at the recipes, they realized that they were similar. Colby worked with them to meld the two recipes into one. His version of their two beers is the Sculpin you know today.

Here are the beers that Colby will be introducing us to:

Virtual Tasting Beers

Sculpin IPA | India Pale Ale

A trophy beer that’s a testament to our homebrew roots, Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, knew hopping an ale at least five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

ABV: 7%; IBUs: 70

Suggested Food Pairings:

  • Spicy Thai Food
  • Caramel Apple Tart
  • Camozola and Artisanal Blue Cheese

Wee Gus | Hoppy Lager

Wee Gus is what happens when our brewers swim in the opposite direction of the haze craze. Wee in size – not in flavor – this crisp, dry-hopped beer has as refreshing undercurrent of floral and citrus aromas that starts out light on the palate and finishes with a super-dry hop showcase.

ABV: 4.2%; IBUs: 25; under 100 calories

Suggested Food Pairings:

  • Sashimi
  • Seared Ahi Tuna
  • Avocado Toast topped with Micro Greens
  • Peach and Burrata Summer Salad
  • Parmesan Polenta with a Shallot and Mushroom Medley

Big Gus | India Pale Ale

This behemoth is a clear, extremely dry and colossally dry-hopped India Pale Ale. Big Gus has the spine of a traditional IPA with a generous amount of American hops and a delicate pilsner malt. Immense in proportion, immensely satisfying on the taste buds.

ABV: 6.5%; IBUs: 50; under 150 calories

Suggested Food Pairings:

  • Buttery Jumbo Shrimp Skewers with a Fresh Basil and Garlic Marinade
  • Guajillo Steamed Mussels with Spanish Chorizo
  • Korean BBQ
  • Seasoned Fried Calamari

Legion Lager – Limited Release | Lager

A classic German-style beer, brewed in San Diego. A solidly balanced Helles that finishes clean with a hint of hops, it would easily fit in at a German beer garden. But we think it’s perfect for enjoying on the beach, the boat or anywhere else you can put an ice chest full of beer.

In celebration of our partnership with the San Diego Legion, a Major League Rugby franchise in San Diego, as the Official Craft Beer, we packaged a special version of our award-winning Longfin Lager complete with new artwork from Paul Elder. Available in Ballast Point tap rooms in San Diego beginning on March 18, while supplies last

ABV: 4.5%; IBUs: 17

Suggested Food Pairings:

  • Fresh Baja Style Ceviche Tostadas
  • Classic Cobb Salad and House Made Dressing
  • Thai Noodles with Spicy Peanut Sauce
  • Spicy Thai Roll Sushi or Sashimi

Habanero Sculpin – Limited Release | India Pale Ale with Habanero Peppers

Our popular IPA with a punch of heat. Our Sculpin IPA with Habanero Pepper began as a crazy experiment that’s taken on a life of its own. While it’s bright fruit notes and hoppy bite has made the original one of our favorites, this version takes that balance of flavors to the next level with the citrusy, floral heat of habaneros. Sculpins are known to sting, but this ones’ got a kick.

Back by popular demand in limited release, Habanero Sculpin won last year’s Ballast Point Bracket Challenge during March Madness. This fan-favorite was the most voted on beer that Ballast Point fans wanted back in package. We packed it in limited release to celebrate this year’s tournament with new can art representative of classic Sculpin with a Habanero twist. Available in Ballast Point tap rooms beginning on March 31, while supplies last

ABV: 7%; IBUs: 70

Suggested Food Pairings:

  • Coconut Basmati Rice
  • Jamaican Jerk Chicken
  • Hearty Ground Beef Chili
  • German Pretzel with Beer Cheese and Hot Mustard
  • Tropical Bread Pudding
