A shootout near a freeway killed a California Highway Patrol officer and wounded two others Monday before the gunman was fatally shot, authorities said.
The officer-involved shooting occurred about 5:35 p.m. in the area of Box Springs Boulevard and Eastridge Avenue, just west of Interstate 215.
The shooting stemmed from a traffic stop initiated by a CHP officer, according to Riverside Police Department Officer Ryan Railsback. He didn't immediately know why the car was stopped.
The CHP decided to impound the truck and a tow had been called when the driver reached into the back of his pickup — apparently to retrieve personal items — but instead grabbed a rifle and opened fire, authorities said.
Three CHP officers were shot. Video showed one officer being taken away in a police car. Another was taken to the hospital by helicopter.
California Highway Patrol Officer Andre Moye, 33, was shot and killed when a gun battle erupted on a traffic stop. Two other CHP officers were wounded, one critically. The suspect is dead.
Officer Moye was a son, a brother, and a friend. He was a husband.
